As summer begins to wind down and the first signs of fall arrive in Charlestown, it’s a wonderful time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful places that surround us.
In August, we kicked off #LandTrustDays with a bird-watching paddle on Ninigret Pond, exploring the shoreline while learning more about the birds that make their home there. We also participated in Charlestown Farm Day, where we welcomed visitors to our table at the historic Amos Greene Farm and shared more about CLT’s commitment to farmland preservation.
There’s plenty to look forward to this month, too! Join CLT Board member Lisa McGinley for a Quiet Walk in the Woods, or get creative at our Shell Decoupage Class, a special fundraiser benefiting the Land Trust. And October will bring two CLT favorites—our Annual Meeting, with more details coming soon, and our always-popular S’mores Social. Scroll down for more details.
Behind the scenes, our all-volunteer Board continues to be hard at work protecting Charlestown’s open spaces through ongoing land acquisition projects, as well as caring for CLT properties and trails.

We’re excited to share a newly completed video celebrating the Poetry of the Wild installations at Mill Pond Preserve. Created with support from the Rhode Island Foundation and in collaboration with Ana Flores of EarthInform Studio and Kris Craig of 2MuchTimedesign, the video offers a closer look at the project. Please join us for a Quiet Mindfulness Walk in the Woods at Mill Pond Preserve. Led by CLT Board member Lisa McGinley, we’ll begin with a grounding exercise before setting out to walk the trails together, taking time to slow down, notice our surroundings, and appreciate the natural world around us.

Join us for a fun and creative evening in support of the Charlestown Land Trust! Instructors Connie Phelan and CLT President Jane Burns will guide participants in creating two beautiful shell decoupage pieces—perfect for displaying at home, giving as gifts, or turning into ornaments. Tickets are $30 per person, and thanks to the generous donation of all materials, 100% of the proceeds will directly support the Charlestown Land Trust and our work to preserve and protect the special places of Charlestown. No experience necessary—all you need to bring is a pair of scissors and your creativity!

Join us for the Charlestown Land Trust’s Annual Meeting! Free and open to all, the evening will include reflections on the past year, election of directors to our Board, and a look at the exciting work ahead. We’re also looking forward to welcoming a special guest speaker for a presentation on a topic of interest to the Charlestown community. Join us for one of our favorite fall traditions—the CLT S’mores Social! Think of it as our fall open house! It’s a chance to meet the people behind CLT, explore the trails at Mill Pond Preserve, and learn a little more about what we do. We’ll kick things off with a guided trail walk, followed by a cozy gathering around the fire to enjoy s’mores and conversation. This free, family-friendly event is a wonderful way to experience the preserve in the fall and get to know the CLT community. We hope to see you there!
