Charlestown Land Trust

June at Charlestown Land Trust

Dear CLT Supporters and Friends,

Summer is underway, and it’s a busy season at CLT! Our all-volunteer Board of Directors continues its behind-the-scenes conservation work, while our dedicated stewardship volunteers make progress on our soon-to-open new trail (more details coming soon!).

Last month, we enjoyed partnering with the Hopkinton Land Trust, Cross’ Mills Public Library, Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association, and Earthinform Studio on Writing About Place, a series of workshops and guided walks. Continuing the theme of connecting people with the landscape through art, we also added two new Poetry of the Wild installations to Mill Pond Preserve. Created by local artists Brian O’Connor and Marty Parker using sustainable materials, the boxes feature poetry by Susan Killingbeck. Visit Mill Pond and check them out!

Looking ahead, we’re gearing up for our Annual Summer Party at The Nordic. Tickets are now on sale, and this is an event you won’t want to miss! It’s always a memorable evening of great food, music, and community in support of conservation in Charlestown. Keep reading for details about the Summer Party and other upcoming events, and stay tuned—there’s much more to come this summer.

With gratitude,

All of us here at CLT

Inspired by Place

The following poem was written by CLT member Pat LaRose during our guided nature-writing hike at Mill Pond Preserve on May 23rd as part of the Writing About Place series.

In Pursuit of the Oriole by Pat LaRose

Somewhere above me I hear the whistle-like

call of an oriole singing through the canopy.

I say aloud—”Show Yourself!”—the bird

keeps his own counsel, stays hidden,

defeats my desire to glimpse his beautiful

gold/orange/black colors winging through the trees.

We must count our blessings in what we can do,

at times, and leave lofty goals to another day.
